Investment pathways: What happens if clients don’t seek your advice

Retirement is one of the most complicated financial events your clients face and your advice is key to making sure they achieve a good outcome.

Under Financial Conduct Authority rules, unless your clients receive a personal recommendation from you to crystallise their pension funds, they’ll be presented with investment pathway guidance from their pension provider to help them choose investment funds for their drawdown pot.

It’s important to remember that investment pathways are a best estimate from a pension provider who knows very little about a customer. They may not achieve as good an outcome for your clients as you can. Personally tailoring your investment recommendation to your client’s attitude, needs and capacity for loss is part of the value you add when your client crystallises their pension.
